Empowering Women and Girls Through Film Editing
Overview
FilmFemmes is an initiative of Future Leaders Initiative SL designed to empower young women and girls in Sierra Leone through filmmaking, digital storytelling, and advocacy. It creates a safe platform for girls—especially those in rural areas—who are often silenced by harmful practices, violence, and lack of opportunities, to tell their own stories and inspire change
Our First Support
FilmFemmes was first supported by GivingJoy, who provided us with a $500 grant. With this, we were able to:
-
Purchase essential equipment, including a desktop computer and camera.
-
Hire a trainer to guide participants.
-
Bring together 10 girls from our free C2C Computer Program to begin their journey in digital storytelling.
Despite challenges such as frequent power cuts, high fuel costs, and transportation barriers, the girls successfully completed their training
Where We Are Now
Today, FilmFemmes has:
-
10 trained girls with skills in filmmaking and video editing.
-
Films ready to be edited and shared, focusing on child rights, gender equality, women’s health, and ending violence.
-
A growing movement of young women eager to raise their voices and spark change in their communities
Our Vision
We want to expand FilmFemmes into a hub for leadership, creativity, and advocacy—a space where more girls can learn, create, and share their stories with the world. With continued support, we can amplify more voices, inspire policy reforms, and foster a generation of young women who are leaders, creators, and catalysts for justice.
