Successful No Hit Zone Workshop Empowers 150 Participants in Lungi Town, Sierra Leone


We are pleased to report the successful completion of a comprehensive two-day No Hit Zone workshop at SLCU-Clozet in Lungi Town, Sierra Leone. This impactful event brought together 150 participants dedicated to fostering safer environments through the adoption of non-violent discipline strategies.

Program Overview:

The workshop provided an in-depth exploration of the No Hit Zone initiative, emphasizing its commitment to eradicating physical punishment in various settings, including schools, homes, and communities.

Insightful Session by Dr. Lucien X Lombardo:

Dr. Lucien X Lombardo, a respected member of the No Hit Zone committee, delivered a pivotal session focusing on:

  • Introduction to the No Hit Zone Initiative: Dr. Lombardo articulated the core principles, stating unequivocally that:

  • No adult shall hit a child.

  • No child shall hit another child.

  • No adult shall hit another adult.

  • No child shall hit an adult.

He also emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity of all individuals, including children, parents, teachers, family members, and community members, in alignment with the No Hit Zone principles.

Impact of Physical Punishment on Children:

The workshop highlighted the adverse effects of physical punishment, covering:

  • Emotional and Psychological Impacts: A comprehensive analysis of the detrimental effects physical punishment can have on children's emotional well-being and mental health.

  • Long-Term Consequences: A discussion on the enduring negative impacts that childhood experiences of physical discipline can have on behavior and relationships.

Introduction to Positive Discipline Techniques:

Participants were educated on effective non-violent disciplinary methods, such as positive reinforcement, clear boundary-setting, and other strategies that promote respectful and constructive interactions.

The Crucial Role of Educators:

Mr. Mohamed Jim Kamara, a former representative of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) Lungi branch, emphasized the vital role educators play in promoting and implementing positive discipline practices and establishing No Hit Zones within educational institutions.
